About
The Neo-Akan Movement (Neo-Akanism) is a cultural renaissance initiative dedicated to uniting Akans worldwide through the revival and modernization of Akan traditions, art, and communal values.
While we fought passionately for political independence, we often failed to actively decolonize our minds, systems, and cultures, leaving colonial structures and ideologies largely intact. True freedom requires dismantling these remnants and reclaiming our identity.
Through art, design, language, and community, the movement seeks to inspire Akans to reclaim their heritage, redefine modernity, and contribute meaningfully to a global cultural landscape.

Four archetypes of Akan creative practice — no judgment of value, only labelling based on features. An Akan creative is one who makes art for the purpose of using the Akan culture as a canvas and medium.
Practices, forms, and expressions that remain aesthetically and functionally similar to those of two centuries ago. Frozen in time, maintaining traditional forms, materials, and methods.
PreservationA blending of Western or foreign forms with Akan principles, materials, and expertise. The essence remains Akan, even if the form is adapted for new environments or needs.
AdaptationAttempts at cultural blending where the value system is foreign and the Akan aspect is only symbol and surface. Mass-produced, superficial, or appropriative — lacking authentic philosophical grounding.
AppropriationA strict, transformative approach that seeks to recreate the world through Akan philosophy. Everything is translated into Akan terms and principles, adapting foreign techniques using local resources and worldviews.
